EVERLANE

There are few companies that I admire as much as EVERLANE. Their dedication to pure, radical transparency forces all of us to step up our work ethic. Below is a short I compiled as a potential addition to the EVERLANE team in hopes that I may join their ranks. I hope you enjoy.

Every Day

I don't come from a traditional schooling background. My education is in studio and through self propelled projects. I try to keep momentum by
1) watching comedies
2) keeping tabs on the design world through apps like PULSE
3) reading books on design theory, mostly those assigned in colleges
4) watching tutorials on lynda.com
5) being out in the real world and not stuck behind a computer/desk all day

I also frequent Seth Godin's site for daily inspiration.
What elements in your daily quest for design/art keeps you going?

Doing the research

I've had the opportunity as of late to present a shirting program idea to a group of investors, and I found myself having to pull back from the grand planning to get some real figures down. Yes, the project is exciting and could be this that or the other-thing, but I am also wanting to present the practical application of said idea.
Enter: US census: this is an amazing tool for just about any profession. You would be surprised as to how much information is out there concerning spending habits, age demographics, and household (fill in the blank). So, before selling your great big awesome idea, make sure to see it from all angles!

To The Freelancer

Some questions to ask in regard to your dealings with work that's borderline freelance. Make sure you know how flexible you can be. This is a good place to start. See below for excerpt. On a related note, I know in NYC it's illegal to have an unpaid intern unless for school credit. By law, they should be receiving minimum wage, unless again for school credit.

Lookbook, Video, Video, Lookbook

Deadlines,
In school, I've heard horror stories of fashion majors having unreal deadlines for (enter ambiguous assignment). I've always had a hard time following that as a good model for learning. Buuut, as a freelance based individual, I've come to realize that those situations arise from time to time. As of late, I have four projects, some in the infancy stage some more mature, that are all due in five (5) days. Whether it be through school or chance, it's a good practice to go insane for a minute.

Coterie 2013

Finishing off the last day at Coterie I ran into a large amount of like-oriented garment practitioners. Simply entering the main floor was an overwhelming experience. It's amazing to think that thousands upon thousands of garments are here in one place to potentially placed in (think of store near you).
Talk about competition.
